Pests can ruin your summertime festivities pretty quickly. Unfortunately, the hot and humid summer conditions (not to mention those summertime thunderstorms) can bring out certain critters if you don’t take the proper measures to keep them at bay. Learn how to keep pests away from the home and yard this summer with these pest control practices, so you can enjoy your summer without any visits from unwanted guests.

Block Ways of Entry

The first line of defense is to make it difficult for pests to even find a way into the home to begin with. Repairing holes in screens can make a significant difference. Check around doors and windows for gaps. If window stripping is worn, it should be replaced.

Keep a Clean Kitchen

A pile of crumbs on the counter or floor is like a treasure chest to ants and other insects. When there is no treasure to be found, they will go elsewhere. Counters should be wiped, floors should be swept, food should be put away immediately, and trash should be taken out regularly. Fruits and veggies should never be left to ripen on the counter, as this invites fruitflies which can be very difficult to get rid of.

Get Rid of Standing Water

Getting rid of standing water is the first step to control mosquitoes. Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes and is their favorite place to start a family. It’s easy for standing water to go unnoticed sometimes, so your property should be specifically and regularly checked for it. Look in rain spouts, check for leaks near air conditioning units, and pick up any water toys that may be left in the yard.

Don’t Ignore the Outdoors

Landscaping should be well maintained to avoid overgrowth, which is the perfect home for pests and their nests.

Some simple tips for homeowners:

  • Trim bushes and trees that are near the house.
  • Rake up debris.
  • Regularly check outdoor furniture for spider webs and egg sacks and remove any immediately.
  • Store firewood away from your house or shed (five feet minimum distance), in racks above the ground.

Pests are not only annoying but can be damaging to the home and the well-being of a family.

While there are many practices to prevent pests from taking over a home, sometimes it takes a professional to really get the job done. Whether one chooses to do it all on their own or hire an expert pest control service, utilizing these tips can help take control of the yard again and have a better pest-free summer.
